New Politics: Renewing Labour's Agenda

Jon Cruddas MP Jon Cruddas, MP for Dagenham in the British House of Commons recently gave a Chifley seminar address in Canberra. Jon Cruddas is a dynamic member of the House of Commons and a keen proponent of party reform. A voice for the 'modernising centre-left' he has mounted a strong case for the renewal of Labour's agenda after 11 years in office. In 2007, Jon Cruddas was a contender for the Deputy Leadership of the Labour Party, winning the first round of voting.

Jon spoke at length on the current situation in the UK, particularly focusing on the policy challenges facing the government. He provided some useful commentary on demographic movements across the UK, with a particular focus on some of the real achievements in tackling inequality and social exclusion in the UK over the last 11 years.

Jon also spoke on themes related to his pamphlet on party reform, titled Fit for Purpose, making a strong case for further reform of party structures in social democratic parties to make them more accountable to members and engaged in the community.
