In the lead up to the 2009 Progressive Governance conference, Policy Network has released a hand book of policy ideas from over thirty of the world's leading progressive thinkers.

The handbook contains 38, 700 word articles, that focus on three broad policy themes:

  1. Financial Market Governance
  2. Building a more equitable and sustainable international order
  3. A modern role for the state in the new economic and social paradigm.

The 38 articles delve into a diverse range of subjects that each give a unique perspective on how progressive policy maker may be able to create the right response to the current financial crisis. Martha Nussbaum gives readers a brief insight into the "capabilities approach" which, Nussbaum believes, could provide a theoretical framework from which to create progressive policy responses.

James K Galbraith offers five short and sharp policy responses to aid in putting the economies of the US and Europe back on track. Galbraith's suggestions include implementing effective auditing of banks, introducing better targeted financial regulations and creating provisions to ensure that economic forecasting is made reliable and realistic.

John Podesta posits the view that the current financial crisis has created an opportunity to properly invest in rebuilding our energy infrastructure to meet the challenges presented by climate change, as well as providing significant new opportunities for creating new employment and protecting energy industry based communities from the ravages of the financial crisis and shift to a low carbon economy.

This handbook is a considerable contribution to the debate about how progressive policy makers shape the next period of global economic development.
